HELENA, Mont. – Today, Governor Greg Gianforte issued the following statement in response to the Bureau of Land Management’s new “Waste Prevention, Production Subject to Royalties, and Resource Conservation” rule, which will take effect on June 10.

“Today's announcement from the Bureau of Land Management is the latest attack in President Biden’s war on energy. By issuing this rule, the Bureau is undermining Congress by acting outside of its statutory authority,” Gov. Gianforte said. “This regulatory overreach will undoubtedly raise the cost of reliable energy for Montanans. Instead of promoting his radical green agenda, President Biden should be expanding natural gas production and prioritizing policies that provide affordable and reliable energy for American consumers.”

The recent rule follows one of several actions from the Biden administration that threaten American energy independence and businesses.

Since President Biden took office, his administration has terminated the Keystone XL Pipeline, banned new oil and gas leasing on federal land, and suspended all oil and gas leases for portions of the non-wilderness Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Gov. Gianforte is one of several governors who have repeatedly called on Biden to reverse these costly actions, among others:

  • January 2021: Governor Gianforte to President Biden: Cut Through the Malarkey and Reconsider Keystone XL Decision
  • February 2021: Gianforte, Governors Urge President To Reverse Ban On New Drilling On Federal Lands
  • March 2022: Gov. Gianforte Urges Pres. Biden to End Reliance on Foreign Energy, Make America Energy Independent and Secure
  • January 2024: Governor Gianforte to President Biden: Pull the Plug on Electric Vehicle Mandate
