MT Dept. of Revenue Director Mike Kadas to Retire May 11 from Department

HELENA – Montana Department of Revenue Director Mike Kadas has announced his retirement from the department. His last day as the department’s 17th director will be May 11.

Kadas has served as Revenue Director under Governor Steve Bullock since January 7, 2013. As director, he has led a staff of about 600 employees and managed a budget of about $50 million.

During his tenure, Kadas has worked to make Montana's systems of taxation more understandable, efficient and progressive.

“From his time as a Legislator, as Mayor, and as Director of the Department of Revenue, Mike has made a meaningful impact on our state,” said Governor Steve Bullock. “I've always admired his intellect, his leadership and his thoughtful manner. His retirement is earned and deserved, and I appreciate what he has given to our administration and state.”

“I want to thank Governor Bullock for giving me the opportunity to serve our extraordinary state and its people,” said Kadas. “And I’d like to thank the employees of the department for their dedication and willingness to serve Montana. It has been an honor and privilege to be a part of their team and work for the people of Montana.”

Over the last 35 years, Kadas has served in a variety of private and public positions. From 1983 to 1996 he was a Montana State Representative, serving on the House Appropriations Committee for eight of those years. From 1989 to 1996, he owned and operated a small construction company. From 1996 to 2006 he was the Mayor of Missoula. He then became Director of Special Projects at Rivertop Renewables, a Missoula-based, biodegradable chemicals company. Kadas holds a B.A. in economics-philosophy and a M.A. in economics from the University of Montana-Missoula.

Kadas plans to spend some time cycling, helping his son work on his house, and working on his golf game. He and his partner Martha Newell live in Missoula and have two sons.
