Montana counties request property recertification by Department of Revenue

HELENA – The Montana Department of Revenue received requests from taxing jurisdictions in 20 counties to recertify their property values. This follows the department’s property valuation settlement agreement with NorthWestern Energy on October 14, 2016. Forty-one counties were affected by the settlement, 15 were not.

The deadline for taxing jurisdictions to submit requests to the department was Wednesday, October 26. The department anticipates completing our processing of recertification today. Upon receiving the recertification, the county prepares, prints, and mails tax bills to property owners.

NorthWestern Energy’s 2016 appraised market value was $2.6 billion. The department and company agreed to a market value settlement of $2.4 billion. This results in a $10 million reduction in NorthWestern Energy’s 2016 property tax bill from $144 million to $134 million. Although, it is a $12 million increase from the company’s 2015 tax bill of $122 million.

“The department wishes to thank the many local governments and schools, and particularly county commissioners and treasurers for their attention and quick turnaround deciding whether to recertify,” said Mike Kadas, Director, Montana Department of Revenue.

The 20 counties that requested recertification are Broadwater, Carbon, Cascade, Chouteau, Deer Lodge, Gallatin, Glacier, Jefferson, Judith Basin, Lake, Lewis & Clark, Meagher, Missoula, Park, Ravalli, Sanders, Silver Bow, Sweet Grass, Valley and Yellowstone.
