Denny Honored as the McKinney-Vento State Coordinator of the Year Winner by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth

Washington, DC — The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) has awarded their McKinney-Vento State Coordinator of the Year Award to Heather Denny, Montana State Coordinator for Homeless Education at the Montana Office of Public Instruction. Denny will receive this honor during the 31st Annual NAEHCY Conference on November 3-5, 2019, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC.

Denny lives near the rural community of Whitehall, Mont. She received her bachelors of art in history from the Univ. of Texas El Paso with a certification in secondary education, a masters of education in school counseling from Montana State University – Bozeman, and is currently pursuing a master’s in education leadership. She is a licensed teacher and school counselor. For the past eight years Denny has served as the Montana State Coordinator for Homeless Education.

Denny’s focus is on transforming Montana’s Homeless Education program to improve educational access, achievement, and graduation rates for homeless students across the state, with a focus on rural and reservation communities. She has presented at the NAEHCY Annual Conference, the National Dropout Prevention Conference, the National ESEA Conference, the IEL Family Engagement Conference, and provided dozens of workshops and trainings at the state, regional, and local level across Montana.

The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) is a national membership association dedicated to ensuring educational equity and excellence for children and youth experiencing homelessness. We provide technical assistance and share best-practice implementation strategies to build the capacity of individuals, agencies, and organizations to ensure the academic success of children. We support state and federal administrators, homeless liaisons, educators, community service providers, advocates, parents and youth. We collaborate with partners for policy change to ensure all children and youth succeed in school.
