HELENA, MT – Superintendent Hedalen highlights Montana’s results on the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report card, which show the state performing above the national average and ahead of other western states in all assessed categories.

“These results reflect the ongoing efforts of Montana’s students, teachers, and school communities,” said Superintendent Hedalen. “While we are seeing some positive elements in the results, it’s clear that there are areas where we must improve. A positive area to highlight that is trending in an upward direction are the 8th grade math scores. We are committed to addressing these challenges and continuing to work towards better outcomes for all of Montana’s students.”

The NAEP report card, often called the “Nation’s Report Card,” measures student achievement in mathematics and reading among fourth- and eighth-grade students. Montana’s strong performance demonstrates the state’s continued focus on high-quality education and student learning.

“While these results are encouraging, we remain focused on continuous improvement and ensuring that every student in Montana has the opportunity to succeed,” Hedalen added. “We will continue to support our educators, invest in effective learning strategies, and prioritize student achievement.”

Superintendent Hedalen also noted that the Montana Office of Public Instruction is reviewing the valuable data gathered through the recent assessment of Native students’ perspectives on education. “We recognize the importance of understanding the unique needs of our Native students, and we will be working closely with the Montana Advisory Council on Indian Education (MACIE) and other key stakeholders to reflect on this feedback and enhance educational opportunities for all students across the state.”

Montana’s performance in the 2024 NAEP assessment highlights the state’s commitment to education and positions it as a leader in academic success across the region. Superintendent Hedalen and the Montana Office of Public Instruction will continue working to build on this momentum and support students’ long-term success.
