Superintendent Arntzen and Senator Daines Encourage Registration for Boys and Girls State
HELENA – Superintendent Arntzen and Senator Steve Daines are encouraging high school juniors to register for American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, which will be held at Fort Harrison in Helena from June 16-22, 2024. These are educational programs aimed at teaching American high school students the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship.
“As a teacher of 23 years, I understand how impactful hands-on learning is for our students,” said Superintendent Elsie Arntzen. “During my time as Superintendent, I have focused on civics education by adding it to our state content standards and our graduation requirements. I encourage all of our high school juniors to register to help build the skills necessary to become tomorrow’s leaders.”
“When I attended Boys State as a junior at Bozeman High, my keynote speaker was newly elected Max Baucus, and I met a fellow Boys Stater named Ryan Zinke,” said Senator Steve Daines. “This program is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and make lasting friendships. Who knows, you may even meet Montana’s future governor, congressman or senator! I hope to see young Montanans take advantage of this incredible program and register for American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.”
The program provides hands-on experience in government by being members of a fictional state. Students conduct legislative sessions at the State Capital during the week and both programs elect two Senators to attend the National American Legion Boys Nation and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation in Washington DC.
Students interested in taking part in the program can apply online or at a local American Legion Post. Applicants should have:
- Above average academic records
- Demonstrated leadership abilities
- High moral character
- Interest in government, current events, and public service
The program costs are covered by national, state, and local American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary organizations, local businesses, and other civic and nonprofit organizations.
