Superintendent Arntzen Seeks Taskforce to Review World Languages Content Standards
HELENA – Superintendent Elsie Arntzen is opening the World Languages Content Standards for review and revision. These content standards are housed in Chapter 54 of the Administrative Rules of Montana and have not been revised in nearly 25 years. The revision process began with research conducted by the Office of Public Instruction in January 2023 and will continue with a revision task force in April 2023. The recommendations from the task force will be sent to a negotiated rulemaking committee in September 2023. Superintendent Arntzen is seeking task force members such as parents, teachers, school leaders, tribal members, and community members. Applications will close on March 17, 2023.
“During my time as Superintendent, I have revised five of our decades-old teaching and learning standards; Library Media Content, Social Studies, Computer Science, Career Technical Education, and Technology Integration,” said Superintendent Elsie Arntzen. “I have recently opened four more; English Language Learners, Mathematics, World Languages, and English Language Arts. Revising our 11 content standards is about uniting teaching with today’s learning to better prepare our students for the future.”
This application is for three separate task forces:
- An Application Review Team will review all applicants and select the most qualified to be part of the other task forces
- The Standards Writing Team will use the research and data analysis provided by the OPI and Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) at WestEd to inform the revision of our Montana World Languages Content Standards
- The Standards Review Team will review the work of the Writing Team and provide recommendations to the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee
The recommended revisions from the Negotiated Rulemaking Committee will be sent to the Board of Public Education at the beginning of 2024 with implementation in July 2025.
