Superintendent Arntzen Releases the 5th Year of the Federally Mandated School Report Cards
HELENA – Superintendent Arntzen announces the fifth year of issuing the federally mandated public school report card required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Individual schools received their data before the public data was released. The state report card holds data from the previous, 2021-2022 school year, and is displayed in an accessible digital format. There is an individual report card for each of Montana’s 822 schools plus a report card for our 402 school districts. The school report card definitions, updated each year, explain terms used on the report cards.
“Recognizing that this is a tool for parents and communities to use to measure the success of their local schools,” said Superintendent Elsie Arntzen. “This report card is a reflection of Montana’s local control with federal indicators. Due to the rural nature of our state, many of our smaller schools’ data is masked to guard the privacy of our students.”
The federal government required the state-wide end-of-year assessment without any relief or waivers as in the previous two years. Each report card shows data on:
- student achievement scores in math and reading
- student growth in math and reading
- student enrollment
- per-pupil expenditure at local/state, and federal levels, which includes the federal COVID, Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief (ESSER), funds
- educator qualifications
- graduation rates
The federal requirement for accountability designation as Comprehensive, Targeted, or Universal was updated for this year’s release after being paused since 2019 due to COVID. The annual state accreditation status for schools was also updated after being maintained for the previous two years. The accountability designation for the 2022-2023 school year is based on the 2021-2022 school year data. The number of schools in each designation is:
- Comprehensive – 58
- Targeted – 145
- Universal – 618
