Superintendent Arntzen Announces 2021 Legislative Priorities

October 21, 2020

HELENA- Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen announced this week the Office of Public Instruction’s (OPI) policy priorities for the upcoming 2021 Legislative Session. In a meeting with state education partners and a subsequent email to legislative candidates, Superintendent Arntzen emphasized that securing promised funding of BASE Aid plus inflation for Montana’s public K-12 schools early in the session will be her top priority.

“My number one priority for the upcoming 2021 legislative session is ensuring that Montana’s public schools are funded,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen said Wednesday. “Stability in schools is needed now more than ever. This promise to our students must be kept. I will work to get Montana’s school funding bill to the Governor’s desk as early in the session as possible, as I have successfully done the past three sessions as a legislator and as State Superintendent. Additionally, the focus will be on supporting special education and at-risk students in treatment programs as well as increasing internet access for Montana students and schools.”

In addition to the above three priorities, the OPI has been working closely with the Education Interim Committee on language clean up bills. These priorities do not represent the full range of bills that the OPI may provide support or informational testimony for. The OPI’s legislative webpage will be the best source for education-related information before, during, and after the legislative session.
