Celebrate Farm to School Month!

September 30, 2020

HELENA- October is National Farm to School Month and the Office of Public Instruction encourages Montanans to recognize and celebrate our state’s bountiful agricultural products that support student nutrition.

“Agriculture is Montana’s number one industry and an important source of school nutrition,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen said Wednesday. “I want to thank Montana’s ag producers and school nutrition specialists for working together to ensure that our students have access to healthy, Montana-made foods.”

Due, to COVID-19 two virtual Montana Farm to School Showcases will be hosted by the Montana Team Nutrition Program at Montana State University during October. Attendees will gain insight and be able to discuss topics such as farm to school during the COVID-19 pandemic and serving local, fresh foods in schools.

  • Farm to School during COVID: October 2, 10am-2pm MST with lunch from 12-1pm
  • Farm to Tray Tour: October 27, 3pm-5pm MST

From training and resources to participation rates, the 2018-19 Montana Farm to School Annual Report showcases the program with comprehensive statistics and contextualizes the movement to build healthy futures for Montana’s youngest citizens.

Additionally, Montana Crunch Time is on October 22nd. Whether at school, daycare, college, work, home, or on the go you can participate by crunching into locally and regionally grown apples. This year, states throughout the Mountain Plains Region are competing to see which state can get the most “crunches”. The state with the most crunches per capita wins the Crunch Off trophy. Help Montana take home the trophy by helping to spread the word and registering your crunch by October 31.
