(HELENA)--- The Montana State Library currently has a vacant Library Commission position to be filled.  The State Library Commission plays an integral role in the work of the State Library. Montanans interested in advocating for the State Library and the Montana library and information communities are encouraged to apply.

The Commission sets forth policies and funding priorities that empower the State Library to meet its mission and statutory obligations to:

  • give assistance and advice to all tax-supported or public libraries
  • provide library services for the blind and for individuals with physical disabilities
  • administer a state publications depository library program,
  • provide standards and consistent collection and maintenance of commonly available land information
  • maintain a natural resource information system including the Montana Natural Heritage Program

“The Montana State Library works hard to make sure all Montanans have access to information sufficient to their needs,” said State Librarian, Jennie Stapp. “We look forward to welcoming a new Commissioner who shares this vision and who is ready to ready to roll up their sleeves to help us achieve our goals.”

The Commission is made up of seven members: the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a librarian from the Montana University system, and five Montanans appointed by the Governor. Everyone except the Superintendent serves 3-year terms.

The Commission meets six times a year for Commission meetings in Helena. If you would like to learn more about the Library Commission, please visit the Commission page on the State Library website.
