Whenever a Montanan needs to call 9-1-1, the only concern is getting help and getting it fast. Data about the caller is the backbone for a quick and accurate response. What’s their location and who needs to respond?
Throughout the country, state 9-1-1 programs are transitioning to Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1). This modernized 9-1-1 system relies on GIS data to quickly and accurately route emergency calls to the correct 9-1-1 call center. This transition requires significant coordination with local data providers to pull together information such as addresses, roads, and the boundaries of the cell centers, law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services.
MSL has chosen 1Spatial to provide a cloud-based GIS data management service to support both existing legacy 9-1-1 and NG9-1-1 systems in the state. Using 1Spatial, local jurisdictions in Montana will be able to verify that their GIS and 9-1-1 data is compliant with NG9-1-1 requirements and to evaluate where data improvements need to be made. In addition, the individual jurisdictions will be able to check their GIS map data against statewide mapping to correct gaps, overlaps, or conflicts in data.
MSL is responsible for GIS coordination in Montana, including statewide geospatial maps, services, and technology. Through coordination with all levels of public and private sector partners, MSL collects, maintains, and disseminates statewide quality-controlled maps and promotes the use of geospatial data to meet the needs of the citizens of Montana. MSL’s coordination of the required NG9-1-1 GIS data for the 53 dispatch systems in Montana will play a critical role in the transition to a modernized 9-1-1 system for Montana.
“Montanans expect and deserve 21st century emergency response services,” said State Librarian, Jennie Stapp. “As Montana’s trusted leader in providing accurate information, we are proud to do our part to bring next generation 9-1-1 to Montana.”
1Spatial will provide implementation and training services to support Montana’s NG9-1-1 buildout. These tools will allow the State to validate that its data meets the requirements of NG9-1-1. 1Spatial Inc. CEO, Sheila Steffenson observed. “We are very pleased to add Montana as our seventh Statewide NG9-1-1 Implementation. Further, we look forward to a long relationship with the State to fully deploy and support the NG9-1-1 buildout for usage both at the state and local level.”
