Get outside in June with the Montana Historical Society’s free Summer Walk Series, hosted in conjunction with the Helena Community of Resource Educators.
On Thursday, June 22, at 6 p.m. take a walk on Helena’s West Side with MTHS historian and Community Preservation Coordinator Kate Hampton.
Helena’s West Side graces the city with exquisite and varied architectural styles. Nationally recognized architects contributed to the neighborhood’s designs throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On this hour-long walking tour Hampton will highlight the stylistic trends and works of architectural masters. The tour begins at the Civic Center traveling generally uphill and circles its way approximately a mile through the neighborhood.
Registration opens June 8 at https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/196267 and walks are limited to 20 people.
The following Thursday, at 6 p.m. June 29, wander through Reeder’s Alley with Historian Ellen Baumler.
Reeder’s Alley, the most intact territorial period neighborhood, often is described as home to miners. The alley, however, also is a place of important women’s history. Tour the Pioneer Cabin and learn about its early history, the women who first lived there, and the stories they preserved. Then learn about the women who rescued the Pioneer Cabin and its next door neighbor from demolition and worked to preserve the alley as a Helena landmark. This special remarkable neighborhood is a place of highly charged energy, and the tour will include some of the alley’s “spirited” history. Registration opens June 15 at https://www.register-ed.com/events/view/196268
While it’s not part of the Summer Walk Series, don’t forget to attend the Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebration from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at The Myrna Loy in Helena. The event starts with an African American History Trolley Tour of Helena, which is sold out. At the same time, people can watch the documentary “The Bicycle Corps: America’s Black Army on Wheels,” in the Myrna theater.
At 6 p.m., the Holter’s After-School Teen Art Council invites all to celebrate Juneteenth by creating their own art. Chalk and concrete canvasses will be supplied. From 6:30 to 7 p.m., join Helena Mayor Wilmot Collins, Chris Young-Greer, and J.P. Williams in recognizing the holiday.
Lastly, dance to tunes from D.J. Andrea Cross Guns during a street party from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Food and drink will be available from The Myrna Loy Pub and Habana 406 Food Truck starting at 5:30 p.m.
