Helena's The Dive Bakery to Operate Norm's Café at Montana Heritage Center
Helena, MT — The Montana Historical Society has selected The Dive Bakery to operate Norm's Café, the first year-round café on Montana's capitol complex and a cornerstone amenity of the new Montana Heritage Center opening this December.
The Dive Bakery, a Helena institution for two decades, will bring its signature cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, crepes, scones, and locally roasted coffee to the Heritage Center while continuing to operate its popular 11th Avenue location.
"As a fourth-generation Montanan, partnering with the Montana Historical Society feels like coming home," said Stephanie Boysen, owner of The Dive Bakery. "We already serve many state employees and capitol visitors, and we're thrilled to welcome tourists from around the world who will discover Montana's story at the Heritage Center."
Norm's Café honors Norm Asbjornson, a Winifred native who rose from modest beginnings to build AAON, a leading HVAC manufacturing company. Asbjornson's $10 million gift to the Heritage Center reflects his commitment to giving back to his home state, particularly in education and cultural preservation. His contribution funded both the café and the interactive Mine Shaft Experience exhibit.
"Norm's story embodies the Montana spirit—hard work, innovation, and a deep connection to this place," said Molly Kruckenberg, director of the Montana Historical Society. "Having a café that bears his name, operated by a homegrown Montana business, creates the perfect welcome for everyone who walks through our doors."
Visitors to Norm's Café will enjoy multiple seating options, including an outdoor patio and the Sleeping Giant Terrace—a landscaped green space with sweeping views of the Sleeping Giant mountain formation.
"Whether you're fueling up before exploring our three museum galleries, taking a research break in our Library and Archives, or just enjoying the view with a caramel roll, Norm's Café will be here for you," Kruckenberg added.
The Montana Heritage Center represents the culmination of a 20-year vision to create a world-class home for Montana’s rich history. After several years of construction, the new facility will open to the public on December 3, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 2.
In addition to Norm's Café, the Heritage Center features three museum galleries, a Library and Archives research center, a Montana-made gift shop, an interpretive trail, and interactive exhibits that bring the state's history to life.
The Dive Bakery will offer grab-and-go items beginning December 3, with full café service expected to launch mid-December.
