Law and Justice Interim Committee To Take Comments on Bill Drafts on July 13

The Law and Justice Interim Committee (LJIC) meets on July 13 to continue its policy studies and interim oversight work. In addition to receiving updates from the Department of Corrections and Board of Pardons and Parole, the members will discuss preliminary bill drafts they are considering as part of several interim studies. The studies include the:

  • SJ 19 study of sexual and violent offender registries;
  • HJ 31 study of the Montana Board of Crime Control; and
  • HJ 36 study of compensation for wrongfully convicted individuals.

In addition, the committee will learn about challenges faced by reentering individuals and hear from the Department of Justice on staffing changes made by the 2019 Legislature to the Public Safety Officers Standards and Training Council. Time will be provided for public comment on agenda topics.

The meeting starts at 8 a.m. and will be streamed live online at: https://leg.mt.gov/. It will also be broadcast on the Montana Public Affairs Network, or MPAN.

An agenda and other meeting materials are posted on the LJIC's website. Materials include copies of the preliminary bill drafts and instructions on how the public can provide comments and participate in the meeting.

Written public comments are also accepted and encouraged. Written comments received by 5 p.m. on July 10 will be provided to the committee members in advance of the meeting. Written comments received after that time will be included in the committee's minutes log for the meeting. All comments become part of the committee's permanent public record.
