HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today announced Montana was ranked as the second most patriotic state in the country.

“As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, it’s fitting that Montana has been recognized as one of the most patriotic states in the country,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Whether serving in our military, volunteering in our communities, or participating in our elections, Montanans consistently put service before self. That commitment to our neighbors and our nation is what makes Montana exceptional.”

According to a recent report by WalletHub, Montana was named the second most patriotic state in the nation, behind Virginia. The rankings were based on 13 indicators of patriotism, including military service, veteran population, voter participation in the 2024 presidential election, and volunteerism rates.

Montana ranked among the top states for voter turnout in the 2024 presidential election, and the report noted that Montana had the highest primary election turnout in the nation in 2020. The state’s veteran population also contributed significantly to the ranking, with 101 veterans for every 1,000 civilians. The report ranks Montana fifth for veterans per capita.

According to WalletHub, Montana ranks second in the nation for jury service and has the second-highest number of Americorps volunteers, with over 37 percent of residents indicating they volunteer for some sort of organization in general. Montana is ranked as one of only 10 states where the volunteer rate is above 35 percent.
