COLUMBUS, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte yesterday recognized Grayson Williams and Chancy Segeberg in Columbus with his Spirit of Montana award for their heroic efforts to save their friends life after he got into a car accident.

“As Montanans, we’re defined by our resilience, sense of community, and of our willingness to help one another in times of need,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Today, we honor Grayson and Chancy as not only heroes, but also as role models. Their example serves as an inspiration to us all.”

During a ceremony held at the Columbus Fire Hall, and joined by dozens of community members, firefighters, and law enforcement officers, Gov. Gianforte presented the young men with a certificate and flag flown over the State Capitol in their honor and shared the story of why they were nominated.

In July 2022, after a day of football practice in Shepherd, Grayson, Chancy, and their friend Ethan were driving home when Ethan’s truck veered off course, overturning and coming to rest in a nearby pasture just outside of Columbus. Driving alongside him and noticing the accident, Chancy and Grayson jumped into action to pull Ethan to safety, called 911, and remain by his side until emergency personnel arrived.

At the ceremony, Ethan reported to the governor that after several surgeries he was fully recovered and back playing basketball, baseball, and football. “I don’t know what I’d be doing right now, without the help of my friends. I don’t know if I’d still be here, I’m really grateful for them,” Ethan said.

The governor’s Spirit of Montana award recognizes Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Montanans may nominate members of their community for the award here.
