SEOUL, South Korea – During his trade mission in South Korea, Governor Greg Gianforte today laid a wreath at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul to honor Montana soldiers who gave their lives during the Korean War.

“The War Memorial of Korea stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and peace,” said Governor Gianforte. “I was humbled to honor the Montanans who gave their lives during the Korean War and to reflect on the courage of all those who served to defend liberty on the Korean Peninsula.”

Governor Gianforte was joined by members of the executive delegation, paying tribute to the bravery and selfless service of those who served. The ceremony included a signing in the memorial’s guestbook, a gift exchange, and a tour of the indoor exhibition hall.

During the Korean War, 19,915 Montanans served in the military, and 193 lost their lives, including 97 who were killed in action or died of wounds. Across the 18 United Nations countries that contributed forces, more than 40,000 soldiers were killed, alongside approximately 152,000 Korean soldiers and police.

The War Memorial of Korea honors these sacrifices through its Roll of Honor, indoor exhibition halls, and outdoor displays, providing a space for reflection on the cost of freedom and the value of international partnership.

“The War Memorial of Korea reminds us that freedom and peace are never free,” Governor Gianforte added. “I am honored to pay tribute to the Montanans who gave their lives in the Korean War. Their courage helped defend liberty, preserve the ideals of democracy, and build the enduring friendship between the United States and South Korea. As we remember their sacrifice, we are reminded that the freedoms we enjoy today were secured through their selfless service. Montana will always honor and remember their legacy.”

Governor Gianforte’s visit highlights Montana’s commitment to honoring its veterans and strengthening international ties. By reflecting on the sacrifices of those who served, the governor reinforced the enduring bonds between Montana, the United States, and South Korea, and the shared responsibility to preserve freedom and peace for future generations.
