FORT BENTON, Mont. – Joined by Representative Josh Kassmier, R-Fort Benton, Governor Greg Gianforte today celebrated new laws providing Montanans the largest tax cut in state history.

“Montanans work hard for what they earn, they deserve to keep more of it, and we’ll keep working to make sure they do,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Working with partners like Rep. Kassmier this legislative session, we proudly delivered Montanans the largest tax cut in Montana history.”

At Longhorn Truck & Tractor in Fort Benton, the governor held a ceremonial bill signing for two tax relief bills carried by Rep. Kassmier.

Proposed by the governor in his Budget for Montana Families, House Bill 212 supports small businesses, farmers, and ranchers by expanding the business equipment tax exemption from $300,000 to $1 million.

In 2021, the governor worked with Rep. Kassmier to increase the business equipment tax exemption from $100,000 to $300,000.

“Taxing critical business equipment makes it harder to grow a small business and is a wet blanket on job creation,” the governor said. “Since taking office, we’ve eliminated this burden for over 5,000 Montana small businesses.”

The governor also ceremonially signed Rep. Kassmier’s House Bill 816, which allocates an additional $135 million from the state’s budget surplus toward property and income tax rebates.

The income and property tax rebates secured by the governor and legislature this session will provide up to $3,850 of relief for Montana families.
