Governor Gianforte Proclaims Montana Mining Day
HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today signed a proclamation recognizing February 9 as Montana Mining Day, honoring the industry’s role in Montana’s history, economy, and energy future.
“Mining has long played a vital role in shaping Montana’s history and supporting our economy,” Governor Gianforte said. “Today, we honor the Treasure State’s rich mining heritage and abundant natural resources and reaffirm our commitment to the men and women who power this industry.”

Last year, Gov. Gianforte signed into law House Bill 203, sponsored by Rep. Curtis Schomer, R-Billings, to establish February 9 as Montana Mining Day of each year to commemorate when the territorial government adopted the state motto.
In the proclamation, the governor recognizes the significance of the state motto, “Oro y Plata,” which means “gold and silver,” and notes how Montana is proudly known as the “Treasure State,” reflecting the state’s rich mining heritage and abundant natural resources. The discovery of gold in Montana brought many of the first settlers to the state and led to the Gold Rush in the 1860s.
The proclamation signing took place at the Montana State Capitol with industry leaders, miners, and community partners.
“Mining supports families, keeps our communities strong, and provides critical resources our nation depends on,” said Matt Vincent, executive director of the Montana Mining Association. “We appreciate Governor Gianforte’s leadership and President Trump’s commitment to policies that protect Montana jobs and allow our industry to operate responsibly and competitively.”
According to the Montana Mining Association, the mining industry supports nearly 18,500 Montana jobs and generates approximately $7.3. billion in economic output each year across the state.
