HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today released the following statement in response to an announcement from the Department of the Interior (DOI) approving the expansion of the Spring Creek Mine in Big Horn County. The decision extends the mine’s operational life by 16 years, enabling the production of 39.9 million tons of federal coal and supporting nearly 300 full-time jobs.

“Thanks to the swift actions of President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, we are unleashing American-made energy to power Montana’s future. Under former President Joe Biden, the federal government waged all-out war on our ‘all-of-the-above’ energy strategy. Today’s announcement is a victory for American energy independence and for lowering energy costs across the nation. It’s great to have a president in the White House who stands with Montana and our miners.”
