Gov. Gianforte Statement on District of Montana U.S. Marshal Nomination
HELENA, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today released the following statement after President Donald J. Trump announced Brian Gootkin, the director of the Montana’s Department of Corrections, has been nominated to serve as a United States Marshal for the District of Montana.
“Brian Gootkin has been the steadfast leader the Department of Corrections needed to become an agency that better serves the people of Montana. Under his direction, we’ve made historic investments to protect and promote a public safety system that supports inmates, corrections officers, and all Montana families. From securing overdue improvements to aging infrastructure, expanding capacity at our jails, and increasing collaboration with local partners, Gootkin has been at the helm of our work.
“I know he will continue to serve our state with dignity in his new role having already exemplified his commitment to Montana communities. I wish him success and a swift confirmation.”
Gootkin was appointed by Gov. Gianforte in January 2021. Prior to the appointment, Gootkin served for 27 years with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office as patrol deputy, detective with the Missouri River Drug Task Force, sergeant in Big Sky, jail administrator, undersheriff, and county sheriff. Prior to joining the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, Gootkin served as a security specialist with the United States Air Force from 1989 to 1993 at Malmstrom Air Force Base.
The United States Marshal performs essential functions of protecting the federal judiciary by apprehending fugitives, transporting prisoners, and protecting witnesses. If confirmed, Gootkin will serve as the 41st U.S. Marshal for the District of Montana.
