HELENA, Mont. – To mark Forest Products Industry Week, Governor Gianforte yesterday presented his inaugural Forest Products Award to Marks Lumber, a family-owned business in Clancy with an 80-year tradition of sawmilling and forest products innovation.

“In keeping with our commitment to be better stewards of one of our state’s most precious resources, I’m proud to recognize Marks Lumber for their work to promote Montana wood products and improve forest health,” Gov. Gianforte said. “The forest products industry is critical to our economy and our environment, and I encourage all Montanans to support their local wood products supplier.”

Gov. Gianforte presents award to owner Steve Marks.

Owned and operated by long time forest advocate and fourth generation Montanan Steve Marks, Marks Lumber has helped treat over 30,000 acres around the Helena area.

In 2020, Marks Lumber joined the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation and the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest on the Brooklyn Bridge Good Neighbor Authority project to help protect the Helena community from wildfire risk.

In addition to their work in the forest products industry, Marks Lumber also launched a multimedia project that advocates for proper forest management across Montana and helps to educate the public on the role the timber industry has in creating and maintaining healthy forests.

Governor Gianforte’s Forest Products Award recognizes an outstanding person or entity for their work to actively manage our forests, responsibly develop our abundant forested resources, and/or promote the use of Montana wood products during Montana’s 2021 Forest Products Industry Week.
