DENTON, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte today met with and comforted residents impacted by the West Wind Fire. The governor also received a briefing from incident command on the ongoing response.

“Our central Montana communities are tight-knit and like family. Their people are resilient, and that resilience has been on display for our entire state in Denton this week,” Gov. Gianforte said. “The people of Denton have my commitment that we will bring every available resource to bear to support them in the wake of the West Wind Fire. Montana stands with Denton.”

The West Wind Fire was first reported on November 30, 2021, and high winds pushed the fire into Denton. The fire is currently mapped at 10,644 acres, and 49 structures have been reported as lost, including 25 homes.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to every individual that suited up to assist in this response and protect lives and property. Thanks to swift action taken by first responders and residents, we saw no loss of life or serious injuries from this fire,” Gov. Gianforte said.

Yesterday, the governor announced the state deployed a Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) County Assist Team to Denton, which took control of the fire yesterday at 1 p.m.

The governor urged Montanans to stay vigilant with recent red flag warnings in the state. “With warmer temperatures and little moisture this week, it’s critical we take precautions when working or recreating outdoors. Most importantly, let’s rally around our Denton neighbors and show them our support.”
