LIVESTOCK LOSS PREVENTION GRANT DEADLINE APPROACHING
Montana’s Livestock Loss Board (LLB) is accepting 2026 loss prevention grant applications. Applications are due January 30, 2026.

In recent years, the LLB’s grant program has advertised hundreds of thousands of available dollars but only a handful of ranchers are taking advantage. Prevention measures such as livestock fencing, carcass composting, guard dogs, and range rider programs are routinely awarded. Under new management, the grant application process has gotten much easier, and reporting requirements are common sense. Over $380,000 is currently available.

Applications are available online (www.llb.mt.gov) or by contacting the board office at (406) 444-5609 or email the Livestock Loss Board (livlossboard@mt.gov).

The Livestock Loss Board will meet in late February 2026 to award grants. Grant applicants will be notified of the meeting date and are encouraged to attend.

The mission of the Livestock Loss Board is to help support Montana livestock communities by reducing the economic impacts of wolves, grizzly bears, black bears and mountain lions on individual producers by reimbursing confirmed and probable wolf, grizzly bear, black bear and mountain lion caused losses and helping to reduce their losses by approving projects and funding programs that will discourage wolves, grizzly bears, black bears and mountain lions from killing livestock.

State law 2-15-3111, MCA directs board actions for loss prevention grants. A copy of this law is available at 2-15-3111. Livestock loss reduction program, MCA (mt.gov).
