DEQ to hold meeting on railyard clean-up project in Livingston
HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public meeting on the railyard clean-up project in Livingston on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Room of the City/County Complex, 414 E. Callender St.
The meeting will include information on the site’s history, areas of contamination, the clean-up process, future work and will conclude with a question-and-answer period.
The railyard, which is about two miles long and a half-mile wide, was formerly operated by BNSF Railway. Previous operations led to soils and groundwater contamination. The primary contaminants include chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons and asbestos.
DEQ issued a Record of Decision for the state Superfund site in 2001 that includes remedial actions by BNSF and additional investigations.
Progress has been made on the site since 2001. Surface soils have been remediated and indoor air was tested in nearby homes and found to be at safe levels. Current efforts are addressing an underground diesel plume and an underground chlorinated solvent plume.
The current railyard operator is Montana Rail Link and the railyard includes active locomotive, rail car repair and maintenance shops.
