DEQ to Host and Present at Public Meetings on Upcoming Construction at the Montana Pole & Treating Plant Superfund Site
HELENA—Construction will once again begin at the Montana Pole & Treating Plant Superfund site located in Butte in Silver Bow County starting May 9. The construction activities are to move the Land Treatment Unit soils into an onsite, engineered repository called a Corrective Action Management Unit (CAMU) that will allow the south side of the site to be redeveloped.
The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will host an open house for local residents to learn more on May 11 at 6 p.m. and will present at the EPA Butte Community Discussion on May 23 at 6 p.m.

A representative will be present at the park next to the Silverbow Fire Training Center from May 9-13 to answer any questions from the public and monitor for dust, vapors and odors during movement of the soils.

An Environmental Justice Plan for the site has also been released. The plan complements the Community Involvement Plan for the site and identifies goals, objectives and considerations for site activities related to the environment and human health.
Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income, with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and policies. To accomplish this, DEQ and EPA coordinate efforts to address the needs of potentially vulnerable populations by decreasing environmental burdens, increasing environmental benefits, and working collaboratively to build healthy, sustainable communities.
This Environmental Justice Plan identifies outreach and public participation efforts that help low-income citizens overcome barriers to accessing information or participating in public involvement opportunities.
