Helena—This month, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has begun construction on four projects within the Upper Tenmile Creek Mining Area Superfund Site near Rimini in Lewis and Clark County. The 2024 work will address waste removal from previous projects, RV Ranch irrigation ditch cleanup and Minnehaha Creek drainage mine sites cleanup. A public meeting to discuss the project, including schedules, haul routes, traffic impacts and future construction activities, is set for April 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Rimini Fire Station, located about a mile north of town at 3290 Rimini Rd.

With this ongoing work, DEQ aims to reduce the loading of metals to Upper Tenmile Creek. Within the Minnehaha Drainage, remedial construction at the Pocahontas, Armstrong, Lucky Joe, Bullion and Beatrice North mine sites will include waste and contaminated soil removal, backfill and revegetation. At RV Ranch, waste and contaminated soil will be removed from along the irrigation ditch and from a stockpile of soil from an earlier cleanup in the Landmark subdivision. Waste from the Minnehaha Drainage, RV Ranch and existing waste staged at the north end of the Luttrell repository will be placed in the repository. Bullock Contracting LLC, of Boulder, Montana, will conduct the 2024 construction. Bullock has previously completed multiple remediation projects at the Tenmile site.
