HELENA—New updated home energy efficiency requirements, adopted this year, require builders to certify that new homes meet minimum code standards by completing and signing an Energy Code Compliance label that is then placed on the main electrical panel of the home. The new statewide energy code is the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code with Montana Amendments. The updated requirements only apply to new homes.

The energy code establishes minimum efficiency standards for insulation, windows, doors, ventilation and air tightness. Updates to the code include:

  • Requiring a higher efficiency rating (U-factor) of at least .30 for windows and doors—U-factor is a measurement of heat flow through a material, therefore a lower U-factor is more efficient
  • Using high efficiency light bulbs, such as LED bulbs, in 90 percent of light bulbs in permanent fixtures in the home
  • Requiring at least one-inch of insulation under the entire floor of any heated slab on grade floor
  • Installing open combustion furnaces and water heaters in a separate insulated and sealed room. Most affected will be new homes with standard gas water heaters

The new code provides an easier way for small diameter log homes to meet code and requires all homes, including log homes, to pass a blower door test confirming the home has been sealed for air tightness.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality reminds new homebuyers they are eligible for the $500 per person, $1,000 per couple, Montana Energy Conservation Tax credit for purchasing a home with high efficiency heating and cooling equipment and above code minimum insulation features. Many new homes in Montana will qualify for the credit. The credit will end on Dec. 31, 2021.
