HELENA—DEQ is celebrating National Groundwater Awareness Week March 6-12, 2022. Groundwater is vital to Montana, with 90 percent of the population relying on groundwater as a primary water source.

“Groundwater Awareness Week is a great reminder to test and inspect your wells,” said Amy Steinmetz, DEQ water quality division administrator. “Montanans rely on groundwater for drinking water—it is up to all of us to do our part to protect and conserve this precious resource.”

DEQ is hosting an event from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022 at the State Capitol in Helena, Mont. The event will feature information on protecting and conserving groundwater from DEQ, Lewis and Clark Water Quality District, Montana Rural Water Systems and more.

The groundwater industry has more than 135,000 open positions nationwide according to the American Geoscience Institute, making it hard to keep up with consumer demand. Jobs in this industry are vital to the health and economy of Montana and can include a variety of careers such as well contractors, hydrogeologists, suppliers and manufacturers.
