Montana Department of Corrections Director Brian Gootkin announced today that Eric Strauss will be joining the department as its new deputy director.

Strauss comes to the department from the Montana Department of Labor and Industry where he served as the administrator for the Employment Standards Division for almost nine years.

“Eric has the experience and leadership that fit perfectly within our culture,” Gootkin said. “He will be instrumental in the efforts of the DOC as we continue to make generational changes, building the future of corrections in Montana.”

Strauss said he is looking forward to this new chapter in his career.

“I am beyond excited about joining the team at the DOC and am looking forward to supporting and contributing to the department’s continued success,” Strauss said. “Through the interview process, it was clear Director Gootkin holds a passion for ensuring the safety of our communities while challenging the offenders under his care to succeed once released. I look forward to joining him and the whole team in fulfilling those goals in support of all Montanans.”

Prior to his tenure with DLI, Strauss held the position of director of Organizational Excellence at St. Peter’s Hospital. He earned his Master of Arts in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Montana.

Strauss’ first day at the DOC will be Dec. 9.

He replaces Cynthia Wolken who served as deputy director for the DOC since 2018. Wolken accepted a position in the private sector.

“Cynthia has helped us create a culture of trust and accountability within the department,” Gootkin said. “We can’t replace Cynthia, but I have no doubt Eric will bring his own unique strengths to our team.”
