HELENA, Mont. – As Montana’s ski areas continue to receive new snow this winter, many of the local mountains will remain open through early April, providing families looking for spring break plans with a final dose of winter adventure.

“You don’t have to travel far to access world-class skiing right here in Montana,” said  Mitch Staley, chief marketing officer at Commerce.

For families looking for a change of pace during their spring break travel, Montana’s natural hot springs help everyone rejuvenate after a day on the mountain. Popular locations to soak after skiing include Jackson Hot Springs (near Lost Trail Ski Area), Elkhorn Hot Springs (near Maverick Mountain Resort) and Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort (near Lookout Pass Ski & Recreation Area).

The abundant snowfall across the state has also provided excellent conditions for cross-country skiing, a great option for families looking for a more laid-back adventure. Top cross-country skiing destinations include Chief Joseph Pass in the Bitterroot Valley, the Red Lodge Nordic Center and Blacktail Mountain Nordic Trails, located near Lakeside.

Many ski areas in Montana also offer community-focused spring events to celebrate the last weeks of the ski season, which often provide some of the best conditions of the year. Events include Lost Trail’s SmashLife Banked Slalom on March 8, Red Lodge’s Throwback ThrowBIG Competition, on March 15, Showdown Montana’s Little Belt Log Jam, on March 15, Montana Snowbowl’s Vertical Challenge, on March 16 and Big Sky Resort’s Spring Series, which takes place every weekend in April.

Dog sledding is another great winter activity for families looking to enjoy Montana’s winter landscape. Places like Spirit of the North in Big Sky, Dog Sled Adventures Montana in Olney and Base Camp Bigfork offer guided dog sledding experiences.  For families looking to attend a unique Montana event, Red Lodge hosts the National Finals Ski-Joring Races on March 8-9 at the Home of Champions rodeo grounds.
