HELENA, Mont. – The Montana Department of Commerce announced today that the Montana-Ireland Trade Commission held its first meeting on Aug. 15 via Zoom. The MITC, which is administratively attached to Commerce, set its goals for the biennium, including hosting in-state cultural events and traveling to Ireland for similar events. Commissioners also discussed a potential trade mission to Ireland, with Commerce providing time, resources, and cost estimates at a future meeting.

“There’s significant excitement about the Commission’s potential impact on trade, culture and education,” MITC Chair Sen. Mike Cuffe said. “We’re looking forward to not only advancing bilateral trade and investment between Montana and Ireland, but also promoting business and academic exchanges between us.”

The MITC was established when the 2025 Montana Legislature passed SB 320, sponsored by Sen. Mike Cuffe (R) of Eureka. Gov. Greg Gianforte signed this legislation into law on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2025.

The MITC is comprised of:

  • Mike Cuffe (R) Eureka, chair of the MITC and sponsor of SB 320
  • Ellie Boldman (D) Missoula, vice-chair of MITC
  • Gary Parry (R) Colstrip
  • Josh Seckinger (D) Bozeman
  • Montana Department of Commerce designee Tony Brockman
  • Montana Department of Agriculture Director Jillien Streit
  • Montana Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian
  • Montana resident Jim McCormick
  • Montana Manufacturing Extension Center Director Paddy Fleming

The MITC was established to foster closer economic ties, promote business and academic exchanges, encourage joint action on shared priorities and support mutual investment in trade, infrastructure and development. Its next meeting will be held Sept.18 at 9 a.m. at the State Capitol/Room 102 in Helena.
