CELEBRATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION AT MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY AWARDS EVENT
If you appreciate historic preservation, the 2017 Montana Historical Society State Historic Preservation Office 2017 Awards Ceremony and reception has some wonders to share with you.
The ceremony will be at the Myrna Loy Center in Helena Friday, Jan. 20, a2:30 p.m. with Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney speaking and presenting the awards to projects and people who have made significant contributions to preserving buildings and sites that are important to Montana history.
Retiring Historic Preservation Review Board members Miki Wilde, Jon Axline and Lesley Gilmore will also be honored for their efforts over the years. Certificates of registration will be presented to property owners that have been listed in the national Register of Historic Places during the past two years.
The four properties receiving special achievement awards this year are:
- Arvon Block in Great Falls for Outstanding Historic Preservation Rehabilitation Project – The property was built in 1890 as a livery stable. By 2012 the downtown location was in disrepair, but has been rehabilitated into the new home for a restaurant, hotel and wine bar.
- “Save the Teslow” project in Livingston for Outstanding Historic Preservation Advocacy – A massive icon in Livingston, the Teslow Grain Elevator has stood sentinel in the community for 110 years. It was scheduled to be demolished in 2016 but the efforts of local citizens save the historic landmark.
- Billings Public Schools, for Outstanding Historic Preservation Stewardship – The district saved and renovated two of the oldest school building in Billings rather than tearing them down.
- Kirby Matthew, Deer Lodge, retired United States Forest Service worker, for outstanding Contribution to Historic Preservation – Since 2000 Matthew has been instrumental in preserving more than 150 historic Forest Service buildings and structures across Montana and the West. He also serves as the local preservation officer in Deer Lodge.
