The Revenue Interim Committee will hold its next meeting November 18-19 in Room 317 of the Capitol building. The House Joint Resolution 35 Tax Study Committee will meet beginning at 10 a.m. on November 18 and the Revenue Interim Committee will convene at 4 p.m. on November 18 and continue the meeting at 8 a.m. on November 19.
The meeting of the HJ 35 committee will focus on narrowing the scope of the study of the state and local tax system. The committee will meet in small groups to discuss which state and local tax issues the study should address and possible solutions to the issues identified. Members of the public may observe the small group discussions but should hold any comments for the public comment periods to be held after the groups report to the full committee. The committee will prioritize issues and possible solutions as it works toward adopting a study plan by the end of the day.
Agenda items for the regular portion of the Revenue Interim Committee include an administrative rule review, agency updates from the Montana Tax Appeal Board and the Department of Revenue, and the review of two income tax credits.
The duty to review income tax credits was assigned to the committee by legislation enacted in 2019. The first two credits to be reviewed are the foreign states tax credit and the new or expanded industry tax credit. Information about each credit is available on the committee’s Tax Credit Review website and interested parties are encouraged to offer public comment about the credits either in person at the meeting or by providing written comments to staff.
