Restitution collected for crime victims tops $30 million

HELENA – Director Mike Batista on Tuesday congratulated the department’s Collections Unit on breaking the $30-million mark in restitution collected for the benefit of innocent victims of crime in Montana.

In the 12 years since the Collections Unit first began collecting court-ordered restitution from felony offenders in October 2003, the unit’s staff members have collected and disbursed $31,211,689.  They have also collected $3.7 million in court-ordered fees.

“The staff who make up the Collections Unit are dedicated to making sure that adult offenders who have hurt others meet their financial obligations to their victims,” Batista said.  “These funds help innocent victims of crime cover expenses like medical and counseling bills, recoup bad checks and replace stolen or damaged property.”
