(HELENA) --- The Montana State Library is soliciting public opinion on a proposal to change the name of Kelly Reservoir in Madison County to Klatt Reservoir. The reservoir is 1.2 miles southeast of Flatiron Mountain as shown on the map at http://tinyurl.com/l7pve5o.
The name was proposed by Sou Thao of Missoula, Montana, a geographer with the U.S. Forest Service. The name change “is to align the name with the owner of the ranch at the time of construction of the facility and in line with the name of the builder and name of the permit issued for the project.” Ernest Klatt (1917-2003) and his brother Cecil (still living) owned the ranch when the reservoir was built. More information about the proposal can be found at http://tinyurl.com/ltzfb9o .
The request to change the name of the reservoir will be ruled on by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), which determines what names the federal government recognizes for natural features of the landscape. The BGN recognizes an individual in each state as that state's geographic names advisor, whose duties include soliciting opinions from state and local officials on name proposals. Montana's geographic names advisor is Diane Papineau, a geographer with the Montana State Library.
The public is invited to submit their comments or opinions on the proposed name change to Papineau by e-mailing email@example.com, by calling (406) 444-4731, or by sending her a letter at P.O. Box 201800, Helena, Montana 59620. All comments will be forwarded to the Board on Geographic Names. The initial comment period ends on June 2, 2017, but all comments received until the Board on Geographic Names makes its decision will be forwarded to it.
