The Original Governor’s Mansion Holiday Home Tour has become a tradition for sharing the warmth of the season with family and friends and enjoying the way that others decorate for the holidays.

This year’s tour will be Dec. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. with the Original Governor’s Mansion at 6th and Ewing Streets as well as four  other Helena homes decorated for the season and ready to welcome you. The event is a joint effort of the Original Governor’s Mansion Restoration Society and the Montana Historical Society.

The special Christmas tours of the OGM will be filled with holiday memories that were told by the children of Gov. Sam Stewart, who was the first governor to live in the mansion more than 100 years ago.  They remembered receiving gifts like pick-up-sticks and Old Maid playing cards, and a special Christmas when they gob Flexible Flyer sleds they used to ride down Rodney Street.

“We were just as glad not to get clothes for Christmas,” one of the children remembered.

The Stewarts had their family Christmas tree in the upstairs playroom. “That was because it was easier to keep the house clean for visitors,” one of the children said. “It was a big tree. It was trimmed on Christmas Eve by my parents.”

A collection of historic Christmas tree ornaments donated by Jim Stevens in memory of his wife Darlene is one of the things those who take the tour will see.

Tickets and maps to take you to the other homes on the tour will be available at the OGM the day of the event. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children six to 12 and free for those less than six years of age.  All proceeds go for restoration projects at the OGM.
