OPI Announces Establishment of Negotiated Rulemaking Committees for Revising Montana’s State K-12 Education Content Standards
November 25, 2019
HELENA—The Office of Public Instruction has established three Negotiated Rulemaking Committees (NRCs) to review Montana’s K-12 education state Content Standards in the areas of Social Studies, Career & Technical Education, Computer Science, Technology, and Library Media. Montana is a local control state where classroom curriculum is developed and approved by local school boards, however, the state content standards provide high-level guidance for what Montana students should be learning at each grade level.
The NRCs will provide recommendations to the Superintendent of Public Instruction and Board of Public Education for updates and revisions to Montana’s Content Standards in the above categories which will go into effect in 2021-2022 school year. The negotiated rulemaking process is required by §20-7-101, Montana Code Annotated to ensure transparency and public participation in the rulemaking process.
The committee members represent parents, students, educators, tribal members, and content specialists from around the state. The committees will have public meetings on December 2nd, 3rd, and 5th from 10am-4pm in room 152 of the state capitol in Helena. They will accept public input in-person or comments can be sent to cbartow@mt.gov. Additional information including the draft content standards and how to view the meetings online can be found on the OPI website. The individuals listed below have been invited by Superintendent Artnzen to participate in the committees.
