HISTORY OF BLACKS IN MONTANA TOPIC AT MHS
For a year the Montana Historical Society State Historic Preservation Office has been working on a project to document properties in Helena and across the state associated with African American history.
On Wednesday (Jan. 20) at 10:45 a.m. the Friends of the Montana Historical Society will present “Montana’s African American Places” to update their research, much of which centers on the historic black population in Helena.
To date more than 40 historic properties across the state have been identified by those working on the project. The SHPO staff will talk about the project and share some of the interesting family stories they have discovered.
The Friends of the Montana Historical Society has more than 130 members that volunteer in all of MHS’s programs. If you’ re interested in becoming a member, information will be available at the program.
