Helena High School students will present a unique look at war over the centuries at a free public program at the Montana Historical Society Thursday (Jan. 7) at 6:30 p.m. based on their research on letters in the MHS archives.

This “Reader’s Theatre” involves 19 students from teacher Rob Holter’s Theatre One Class who created the program after reading actual letters written back home to Montana family and friends during wars from the Civil War to operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Letters Home from Montanans at War” offers a first-hand view of war through the thoughts, feelings and emotions of the people who served Montana and the nation and their correspondence with the people back home.

“One of the most rewarding things we do at the Montana Historical Society is to work with teachers and students on research projects that involve primary source archival materials,” MHS Director Bruce Whittenberg said. “We are excited about this special program and the students who put in the time to create it.”

All of the letters used in the program are from the MHS Research Center Archives.
