Law and Justice Interim Committee Meets September 9

Tuesday, September 3, 2019/Categories: Legislative Branch/Tags:

The Law and Justice Interim Committee (LJIC) will meet September 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 102 of the State Capitol. A tentative agenda and other meeting materials are now available at the committee's website:

During the meeting, the LJIC will hear initial updates from two of the agencies under its jurisdiction -- the Department of Justice and the Department of Corrections -- as well as an update from the Judicial Branch. The committee will also start work on three of its four studies and finalize its work plan for the interim.

To start the LJIC's HJ 36 study of compensation for wrongfully convicted persons, a panel of stakeholders will discuss Montana's current educational award law, which is not funded, other states' compensation laws, and the experiences of individuals who have experienced a wrongful conviction.

The LJIC will also start the HJ 31 study of the Montana Board of Crime Control by learning about the current structure, staffing, and duties of the board.

Meeting materials are available on the committee's website. There will be time for public comment on the studies as well as other issues under the jurisdiction of the LJIC.

The meeting will be streamed live online at the Legislature's website and will be broadcast on the Montana Public Affairs Network (MPAN).

For more information about the meeting, please visit the LJIC's website or contact committee staff.
