Governor Steve Bullock will tour first-of-their-kind tribal college apprenticeship projects to support college and career readiness for American Indian students in Montana.

“Montana is leading the way through a first-of-its kind approach that breaks down barriers and ensures students in tribal communities can earn a college degree, while receiving on-the-job training,” said Governor Bullock “Every student, no matter their background or where they are from, should have the opportunity to grow and expand their talent pipeline and fill good-paying jobs. When our future leaders in Indian Country succeed, we all succeed.”

Five Montana tribal colleges this year have created or continued apprenticeships, marking the first known in the nation tribal college apprenticeships and some of the first registered apprenticeships integrated with post-secondary institutions.

In 2015, the Governor’s Office and Montana Department of Labor & Industry, in partnership with Strada Education Network (formerly USA Funds), created three pilot projects at Salish Kootenai College, Stone Child College, and Aaniiih Nakoda College and students completed apprenticeships integrated with existing academic programs for emergency medical technicians (EMT) and certified nursing assistants (CNA). Fifteen student apprentices received academic credit and on-the-job training for these high-demand jobs in their communities. In a second round of projects, students completed apprenticeships in welding, CNA and medical coding.

This program was included in Montana’s successful ApprenticeshipUSA grant application and Montana tribal colleges had another opportunity to apply for funding to create or continue apprenticeships. Northwest Area Foundation generously offered to partner with the state to fully fund all five qualifying projects at Salish Kootenai College, Stone Child College, Aaniiih Nakoda College, Fort Peck Community College, and Little Big Horn College. Students are completing apprenticeships integrated with academic programs in CNA, Licensed Addiction Counselor, HazMat Technician, Wellness Coach, Case Manager, and Behavioral Health.

Strada Education Network is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving lives by catalyzing more direct and promising pathways between education and employment. The Northwest Area Foundation supports organizations anchored in the culture of the people they serve and dedicated to expanding economic opportunity in under-resourced communities. Its region includes the eight states of Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, and more than 75 Native nations.
