Governor Steve Bullock and Lt. Governor Mike Cooney today recognized 13 Montana public schools as winners of the 2018-2019 SMART (Saving Money And Resources Today) Schools Challenge. Now in its 5th year, the challenge engages schools in improving energy efficiency, promoting healthy and environmentally sound practices, and reducing waste.

“Montana’s future leaders understand that they can lead the way in charting a brighter future not just in their schools, but in the world around them,” said Governor Bullock. “It is because of these students that we will preserve and pass on the quality of life we love to future Montanans.”

“I always enjoy seeing students and teachers design projects that encourage energy efficiency, conservation, waste reduction, and health promotion in our schools,” said Lt. Governor Cooney. “This is good for our energy future, as well as for Montana taxpayers.”

This year, schools across Montana diverted nearly 82,000 pounds of waste from landfills and saved $193,495 in energy costs, equivalent to 1,166 metric tons of CO2, which translates to 247 cars not being driven for one year and 19,275 seedling trees grown for 10 years. School projects included building or expanding greenhouses and outdoor classrooms, monitoring air quality in school yards, implementing a bike share program, and tackling cafeteria food waste by using worms.

Each school will receive a $1,000 award to support their ongoing efforts.
