BOZEMAN, Mont.—Governor Steve Bullock today welcomed more than 300 business, education, and workforce development professionals, as he kicked-off his Main Street Montana Project’s workforce development summit. The summit brought together attendees to network, develop solutions to workforce challenges facing the state, and capitalize on strengths in this area. The event took place on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman.

“With strong wage and job growth, Montana is enjoying an economy that is among the best in the nation,” said Bullock. “One of the keys to build on this economic strength is to ensure businesses have a workforce with the knowledge, skills, and experience to fill the careers that are most in-demand. Today’s event is more than a meeting of businesses; it is a critical step in building a strong economy for years to come.”

The summit was a product of the Main Street Montana Project. Through this project, business leaders have highlighted the need for greater networking opportunities for businesses to share successes and challenges they face. It is the first of three similar events that will be held over the coming year. Future events will focus on nurturing innovation and marketing Montana as not only a tourism destination, but also as a business destination.

In addition to remarks from Bullock highlighting strategies to bolster the state’s workforce, attendees also heard from keynote speaker Jenette Ramos, Vice President and General Manager at Boeing Fabrication, the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. Other agenda items included interactive discussions with some of Montana’s leading business experts on workforce issues, and opportunities to network with each other.

“Our state’s economy is strong but we know that we can do more to bolster Montana’s economic future,” said Labor Commissioner Pam Bucy of the event. “This symposium is a unique opportunity for Montana’s businesses to exchange ideas with not only each other, but industry leaders from across the state to find solutions for workforce challenges they face.”

Bullock launched the Main Street Montana Project in 2013, and tapped two of Montana’s most respected and accomplished business leaders: Larry Simkins, CEO of the Washington Companies, and Bill Johnstone, CEO of D.A. Davidson Companies to lead the effort.

The Main Street Montana Project is the first ever business plan for the state to build on the state’s economic strengths, and address challenges head-on. The plan has five major pillars for economic growth:

  • Train and Educate Tomorrow’s Workforce Today
  • Create a Climate that Attracts, Retains and Grows Businesses
  • Build Upon Montana’s Economic Foundation
  • Market Montana
  • Nurture Emerging Industries and Encourage Innovation
