The newly appointed members of the 2019-2020 Children, Families, Health, and Human Services Interim Committee will hold their organizational meeting on June 27.
The committee is one of several legislative committees that meets in between legislative sessions to conduct studies approved by the full Legislature and carry out other oversight activities. The committees are made up of equal numbers of Democratic and Republican members, with members coming from both the House and the Senate.
The Children, Families, Health, and Human Services Interim Committee members will elect officers at the June 27 meeting, as well as decide how to approach each of the interim studies assigned to the committee. The Legislative Council in May assigned five studies to the committee, dealing with:
• prenatal drug use;
• ways to support families in the child protective services system;
• the role of law enforcement and the courts in the child protective services system;
• the state-funded services available to senior citizens and physically disabled people needing long-term care; and
• a proposed uniform law on guardianship and conservatorships.
The committee is also responsible for monitoring the activities of the Department of Public Health and Human Services.
House members of the committee are Barbara Bessette, D-Great Falls; Mary Caferro, D-Helena; Dennis Lenz, R-Billings; Eric Moore, R-Miles City; Gordon Pierson, D-Deer Lodge; and Tom Welch, R-Dillon.
Senate members are John Esp, R-Big Timber; Mary McNally, D-Billings; Albert Olszewski, R-Kalispell; and Diane Sands, D-Missoula.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Room 137 of the State Capitol in Helena and will be streamed live at http://leg.mt.gov. For more information about the meeting, including a full agenda and related materials, visit the committee's website or contact Sue O'Connell, committee researcher.
