Touching stories of the Chinese experience in Helena and a special tour of the Montana Historical Society’s Chinese exhibit will come together in a free public program, “Four Pieces of Jade: Bridging Heaven and Earth,” Thursday (Feb. 4) at 6:30 at MHS.

MHS Board of Trustees member Crystal Wong Shors will share stories of her own life growing up in Helena’s South and West Main neighborhoods as well as stories passed on to her by her long-time Helena family.

Through a collection of remarkable photographs, newspaper archives and accounts of exceptional Chinese women, Shors will talk about the lives of Ruby Chin Wong, an early 20th century immigrant, and the Lee sisters, who were daughters of one of Helena’s earliest entrepreneurs.

The Lee sisters, daughters of Helena businessman Sam Fong Lee, when interviewed in 1921 by the Pittsburgh Press said they were determined to have their own careers and all declared “We’re Americans.”

Refreshments will be served after the talk and MHS Interpretive Historian Ellen Baumler will lead a tour of the “Our Forgotten Pioneers – The Chinese in Montana,” which she co-curated.

The event is being co-sponsored by Humanities Montana.
