Energy & Telecommunications Interim Committee to Meet on July 14-15

Thursday, June 30, 2016/Categories: Legislative Branch/Tags: Energy & Telecommunications Interim Committee

During a two-day meeting in Helena, the Energy and Telecommunications Interim Committee will dedicate a portion of its agenda to a discussion of Colstrip Units 1 and 2 and the future of energy generation in the area.

The committee meets July 14-15 in Room 172 of the Capitol. Talen Energy and Puget Sound Energy will discuss the future of Colstrip Units 1 and 2.  Talen will discuss its plans for continued operation of Colstrip, and the company's ongoing efforts to exit Montana. Speakers also will discuss Puget's development of a rate case outlining the company's path forward at Units 1 and 2 -- particularly in light of passage of Senate Bill 6248 by the Washington Legislature.

Absaroka Energy will discuss the proposed Gordon Butte closed loop pumped storage hydro project. Clearwater Energy will discuss a proposed wind farm near Forsyth that could generate up to 300 megawatts of electricity. The electricity from both the pumped hydro and wind projects could potentially replace power now generated at Units 1 and 2 and be exported to customers on the West coast.

During the two-day meeting, the ETIC also will develop findings and recommendations to begin wrapping up its net-metering assignment as outlined in Senate Joint Resolution 12. The ETIC also will continue with its work on House Joint Resolution No. 7, a review of next-generation 9-1-1 (NG911). The committee will review public comment received on a draft report and proposed legislation aimed at updating Montana's 9-1-1 laws and incorporating NG911 to enhance public safety in Montana.

Much of the July meeting also is dedicated to the committee’s statutory duties. Included on the agenda are the Universal System Benefits program reports, renewable energy credit reports, Public Service Commission legislative proposals, a hydroelectric report, and a geothermal research update.
