HELENA -- The public is invited to an open house event for the Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex (UBMC) cleanup near Lincoln on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the Lincoln Community Hall at 404 Main St. in Lincoln.

The open house is an opportunity to discuss the project and ask questions of representatives from DEQ, the U.S. Forest Service and the Natural Resource Damage Program.  Participants will have the opportunity to speak with project staff at stations featuring restoration information, updated site maps and a demonstration on how X-ray fluorescence is used to guide the daily removal of heavy metals during construction.

What: Open House for the Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex cleanup

When: Thursday, Dec. 13, 6-8 p.m.

Where: Lincoln Community Hall, 404 Main St., Lincoln

Work at the UBMC site in 2018 has stopped for the winter, following the removal of 171,310 cubic yards of contaminated material from the floodplains of the Blackfoot River and its tributaries, combined with the construction of completely new stream channels. All site winterization activities are complete, including flood control measures, access controls, temporary capping of the repository, and lifting of the road closure.

This season’s work brought the total amount of contaminated materials removed to 870,000 cubic yards since the cleanup began in 2014. By the time the project is finished in 2019, DEQ expects removals to approach 1 million cubic yards of material contaminated by historical mining. Cleanup work will be completed by the end of the 2019 construction season by Missouri River Contractors. Restoration work will begin in 2019 under a separate contract.

DEQ will make reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities who wish to participate in the public meeting. If you require an accommodation, please contact Joann Wiggins at 406-444-6795 or least three days before the meeting.
