Thursday, October 11, 2018/Categories: Department of Environmental Quality/Tags:

HELENA – The Department of Environmental Quality and the Bureau of Land Management released a Final Environmental Assessment analyzing potential environmental impacts from a proposed underground mine project at the Golden Sunlight Mine. The Golden Sunlight Mine is located approximately five miles northeast of Whitehall in Jefferson County.

The project, an amendment to their current operating permit, would allow Golden Sunlight to conduct underground mining north of the Mineral Hill Pit and extend mine life by up to three years. Overall, an additional 80 acres north of the current permit boundary would be added to the existing permit boundary to cover the underground workings and road system.  Approximately 1.3 million tons of ore would be produced along with 0.3 million tons of waste rock. More information about the proposed amendment and plan of operations is available online at: http://deq.mt.gov/public/ea/hardrock

DEQ and BLM have jointly prepared the Final EA which discloses potential impacts on area resources, including land use, recreation, soils, vegetation, hydrology, and wildlife resources.  The Final EA is available on the DEQ website at http://deq.mt.gov/Public/ea and the BLM’s eplanning website at: https://go.usa.gov/xPX9V
